Marva was born in Long Beach, CA in 1923. She grew up in Pomona, CA where she was active in school sports, music, hiking, camping, swimming, and was a Majorette and Drum Major for the high school band. Marva was very active in Camp Fire Girls. She was also the honored Queen of Job's Daughters and later active in the Eastern Star Masonic Lodge. In 1943 Marva married Bill Karns, a Navy pilot and her high school sweetheart, and had four children, nine grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Marva graduated from the University of La Verne, and became a teacher, where she inspired students for over 30 years. She also was the school Glee Club Director. As a Music and English major, she wrote and choreographed many music productions for her school. She was a proficient player of the piano and the accordion.

Traveling was another passion for Marva. She traveled around the world to Europe, China, Russia, Canada, Israel and the U.S. She also loved snow skiing, and at the age of 70 she skied on New Year's Eve, from the top of Snow Summit to the bottom carrying a lit torch. She climbed to the top of Mr. Whitney, and spent many summers hiking the Sierras. Marva was very active in her church and served as a Deacon for the Mayflower Presbyterian Church in Pacific Grove.

Marva is survived in her immediate family by four children; Merrilee Winkler of Yorba Linda, Conni Sanchez of Pacific Grove, Kelly Cardwell of Elk Grove, and John Karns of Claremont.

A celebration of Marva's life will be held at Mayflower Church in Pacific Grove on Saturday, August 12 at 2pm. The activities at Mayflower Church will be preceded by visitation at The Paul Mortuary at 390 Lighthouse Ave, Pacific Grove, CA from 9am to 1pm.

Arrangements under the direction of The Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, CA.
